A Concert of Mrs Shobhana Rao and Mrs Shaila Hattangadi

The concert will be held on 15 September 2007 at the Lecture Theater 1, Building I, Deakin University, Burwood Campus, Burwood starting at 6.45 pm and going on till 10 pm.

Donation per ticket is $10 (non students) and $5 for students. Soft drinks and light snacks will be on sale at the venue

About the artists:

Mrs Shobhana Rao and Mrs Shaila Hattangadi, sisters, will perform in Melbourne on 15 September 2007 at LT1, Deakin University, Burwood Campus, Burwood. The concert will start at 6.45 pm and will go on till 10 pm.

The performance will include a comprehensive demonstration of the Indian classical music. It will include portrayals of:
- Introduction to the genesis of Indian classical music from ancient times.
- Evolution into it's present form in the medieval age
- The various genres' and forms of Indian music with interactive demonstration on their important features and differences
- Classical to contemporary - portrayal of select compositions.

Mrs Shobhana Rao and Mrs Shaila Hattangadi have captivated audiences at home and abroad with their individual as well as duet renditions of light classical ghazals, geets, bhajans, thumris, kajris, as well as folk music. Their concerts at the Nehru Centre and Queen Elizabeth Hall in London, a la Salle Indira Gandhi in the University of Paris, Kendra Hall in Durban, Indira Gandhi Cultural Centre in Mauritius, and, at the India Cultural Centre in Berlin, and at all the prestigious sammelans in India have been full house events.

They have sung varied ghazals & bhajans derived from our rich cultural tradition. Mrs. Rao has also sung several episodes of the famous 'Ram Charit Manas' which is broadcast every day over All India Radio, while Mrs. Hattangadi has sung, among others, excellent Krishna bhajans composed by her mentor the legendary composer Jaidev, which was released by HMV.

They were invited to sing an invocation prayer to mark the historic occasion of the 200th session of the Rajya Sabha. They are ICCR empanelled artistes, and have traveled overseas several times for concerts. Some of their notable overseas concerts have been in the U.K., Europe, Dubai, Canada, USA, Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, Mauritius, and South Africa.

The Concert will help raise funds for FISA. All performers, creative personal and other entertainment industry heavyweights have donated their time and resources for the Concert in support of the establishment of FISA.
