FISA welcomes Brumby's first 3 steps to address safety concerns in Victoria
15 June 2009
FISA is calling on all Indian students and the established Indian community to join the Premier on the 12 July for the Harmony walk.
The Harmony walk is an important way Indian students can show the Premier and the whole Victorian community that we reaffirm Victoria's commitment to multiculturalism and racial tolerance and our total condemnation of recent racial attacks on Indian students.
The Premier's Harmony Walk follows two other initial actions by the Brumby government which are good first steps. Firstly, the new hate crime legislation that will help send a strong message that the Victorian government and the Victorian legal system will firmly deal with any racially based hate crimes.
The second positive action in recent weeks was the increased presence of Police on Melbourne's train lines where 'hot spots' for racial assaults have been identified by FISA and documented by the local and international media.
FISA believes that by attending the Harmony Day we can show the Victorian government that we want more actions to address the real issues of community safety and the growing fear of street crime and race-based assaults that is affecting the general community in Victoria.
