FISA concerned about recent arrests and charges

12 June 2009

In the recent two weeks a number of Indians have been arested and charged by Police in both New South Wales and Victoria. FISA is quite concerned with these actions and charges of the Police.

FISA will be working with various Community Legal Centres to provide representation and justice to all people involved in peaceful protests in Melbourne and Sydney.

We strongly advice people to review the website www.activistrights.org.au for more information. In the meantime, listed below are some common tips explaining a person's legal rights. Please call your local FISA volunteer/contact or 1300 FISA 4U for further information and support.

TIPS:

If the police approach you and ask you to accompany them, make sure you ask:

- Am I being arrested?
- Am I being charged?
- If I am being charged, what I am being charged with?

If the police tell you that you are being charged then, you have a right to ask them to arrange legal representation. You can remain silent and offer no comment until representation has been arranged for you.

If you would like more information about these issues call the Legal Aid Office in your state - Victoria 9269 0120 / NSW 1300 888 529.

FISA has prepared this notice in collaboration with Community Legal Centre workers in Victoria.
