Melbourne enjoys a vast network
of trains, trams & buses that gel together to form the public transport system.
The whole network is divided into ‘Zones 1 & 2’. Zone 1 comprises the heart of the city extending to nearby suburbs. Zone 2 starts where zone 1 ends and comprises of the remaining areas which are reached by the public transport system.
You can use one valid ticket to
travel either on trains, trams or buses which makes travel economical and switching
between the modes of transport becomes faster to get where you want to. Ticket
machines on trams accept coins only!
The ticket to use the public transport
system is called a ‘Metcard’ which can be purchased from train stations, on
aboard trams and buses, retail stores or Metlink’s online store.
Metcards come in various denominations and can be purchased for either Zone
1 or Zone 2 or both. Popular types of Metcards are as follows:

2 Hour |
Allows you unlimited travel on trains, trams and buses for a 2 hour period. Metcards validated after 6pm remain valid until 3am the next day! |

2 Hour x 10 |
Allows you unlimited travel on trains, trams and buses for a 2 hour period. This ticket can be validated 10 times (no need to buy a 2-hourly ticket every time you travel). Also, if a Metcard is validated twice in a day, it becomes a daily ticket (and costs cheaper than a daily one)! |

Allows you unlimited travel on trains, trams and buses for a 1 day. |

Weekly |
Allows you unlimited travel on trains, trams and buses for 1 week. On weekends you can travel in all zones even if you have a Zone 1 or Zone 2 ticket! |
