FISA condemns arson attack on Lynbrook Gurudwara

FISA today expressed deep concern at the alleged arson attack on the Lynbrook Gurudwara. FISA expressed full support to everyone concerned and effected by the tragedy. Mr Gautam Gupta, FISA Spokesman said, “Australia as a society gives full right to everyone to practice their religion and this act is a heinous crime against that right of people. Also, that it shows the growing intolerance levels in the community and should be strongly condemned. At this important time, we stand together behind everyone affected by this immoral act.”

Gautam also suggested that he has discussed the matter with Cr Tim Singh Laurence, Councillor Darebin City Council and Master Darshan Singh, President Blackburn Gurudwara amongst others. He said, “This is an important matter that concerns every human being. After speaking with various people it is clear that the Gurudwara leadership is taking full control of the situation. We pledge our full support to the Gurudwara committee and followers. We will do whatever we can if asked for by the committee.”

On the question of whether this attack is an „attack on religion‟ as per Mr Satnam Singh‟s statement in The Australian today, FISA said that it is matter for the Sikh congregation and is their decision. Gautam said, “Classification of this attack is immaterial. Nothing takes away from the fact that the attack is unfortunate and unacceptable. I will encourage everyone interested to contact the committee directly.”

FISA expressed deep concerns on the effect of this attack on students. Gautam said, “every attack takes away the confidence and undo the progress made after the previous attacks. Gurudwara is a special place for all students, where they congregate a couple of times a week to meet, pray to God and offer their services to humanity. This attack will not help the situation we are in and in fact may add to the problems.”

He further said that, “whatever the motive of the crime, we must co-operate with the authorities and allow for the full investigation to take place. It is a house of God and no attack can weaken it. People must remain calm and in contact with the Gurudwara for timely updates. If people are feeling nervous or concerned, they can contact us also where we will try to organise counselling and social support for concerned.”
