If you have come across discrimination at your job, uni or anywhere, this is the place to discuss. To give and get support.

racial attacks

Now that the violent attacks have caught media attention, some fools on both sides are focussing on whether Australia is more racist or whether India is more casteist. Well, both these traits are abhorrent. But there is one sharp difference. In India the religion or cate based riots are instigated and carried out by hired hooligans who are given the temptation of a bottle of whiskey and chicken at night by crooked politicians. No ordinary person, esp teenagers of school age get into trains and hurl religious or casteist abuses on ppl and start stabbing them. This is unheard of in India. If they did do such a thing their parents would kick their butts, let alone the police.
Another thing is , on one hand the Australians are saying these idiots who attack are just drug addicted teen aged fools committing crimes of opportunity. Well I have two questions, If they are fools how are they so politically aware as to be targetting a particular ethnic group. Number two, if this is the case then it is acctually more serious a situation, a kid who has no qualms at stabbing someone at age 15 is in all likelihood going to be a lifelong anti-social psychopath and going by the number of such attacks on all ethnic minorities, these morons seem to be in majority, what then is the future of this country?
If loss of jobs due to recession is an argument, my reply is what the hell is a 15 year old bothered about a job for? He should be studying, by the time he is old enough to join the workforce recession would be history.
Now that I'm o fire more points come to mind. what does such behaviour by 15 year olds speak about our schools? Aren't schools telling them "look, mate, if u get caught once and have a criminal record even a racist employer would prefer a black guy with no record over a violent, school drop-out with past history of drug addiction and a criminal record"
As far as Indians are concerned, they are not going anywhere. Some of these Indians have grown up in such situations that Aussies can not even imagine in their wildest dreams (remember Slumdog Millionaire, well even worse situations) there are states in India where people make guns at home.
And I can only imagine what the "livers" of these drunk teenagers would look like by the time they are 30 since they are already drinking enough to lose control at the age of 15.
I pity these attackers, they have nothing in their lives, their parents don't buy them ipods, they have to steal and stab to get the next can of beer, they have to stay out of their homes at all odd hours riding trains cos they got nowhere to go, and hit ppl just for the heck of it cos they got nothing to do all day long.
Mr Kevin Rudd , sir this crisis that the teen age population faces is a more serious concern for you than anything else right now.

everyone understands it

I think everyone understands the aforesaid things. If common people like you or me can understand the problems of having these unruly teenagers on the streets, the government can also understand it. However, the government is either bound tightly by existing rules/laws for which it cannot do anything against these juveniles....or the government's machinery i.e. police, court etc. are too lazy and inefficient these days. The truth is...although these violences are really bad, they are nothing compared to what a lot of Indians have seen at their homeland....so the Indians are not going anywhere.

recent comment abt. rally on herald sun from indian consulate

TAKE A LOOK HERE:--->> STORY POSTED AT HERALD SUN WEBSITE ABOUT RALLY. I HAVE EXTRACT SOME LINES,,

Former Indian consul general Mr TJ Rao said the recent attacks on Indian students had nothing to do with racism.

"This has nothing to do with racism, Australians are not racist people," Mr Rao said.

"I have been in this country for 41 years and have never had any trouble".

Recent Comment about Indian students

I think Mr TJ Rao never travelled in trains or Buses during his stay in Australia for 40 years.. You don't see r..m act in Hotels or restaurants or some extent in Shopping complex because they all worried about their business. If you travel in Buses or in Trains and other public places you will see the real things...

Hi Sateesha

I came accross your comment and I find this strikingly similar to ones passed by my friends... but lets take a stock of the situation.. I was in Melbourne for 4 days a couple of weeks back and I found it rather annoying during my travel on the Trams. I have been to Melbourne numerous times in the past and the behaviour I have noticed of some Indians are BAD. There is no concern for other people leave alone even other Indians. There is extensive use of foul language and it is revolting that these people don't even stop to notice other Indian women or the aged who very well understand these terms. There is offence taken every single time when somone abuses you but can't take the same! C'mon! Look at yourself before you point fingers. I agree that there are some elements who are outright racist but more often than not you stay well clear of them. Lets not light the fire when we are in the kettle.

what are you talking about ?

Who does not use foul language. Australians use foul language all the time and so does many Indians but that does not give anyone right to attack another person. These attacks are pure racist attacks. These Racist people should grow up and accept that Australia is a multicultural country and that is the truth. If i am with a friend or a family member i am going to speak in my native language anywhere i feel like. Similarly i don't have a problem if someone else speaks in their native language near me. Enjoy life, Grow up and accept the truth. Be realistic, i am not going to speak to my own family in english when i can speak in my native language. When all these Aussie's go to India no one forces them to speak in language other than english. It is a free country, everone has a right to speak whatever they like.

Hi Sui

I accept to some extent what you saying.. But you didn't get my point and also let be honest hear. I am not telling every one is racist ok.. I have been working with lots of people during my stay here and they are great people i never felt bad for single moment,But there are some people still think from racist point of view because of various reasons and they are transferring these thoughts to there kids and that this dangerous for multicultural country. (Like my personal experience. I was walking alone from my office to home there were school students passing in front of me and through a Milk shake all over my shirt. why did they done to me like that..? i just been walking myself without even bothered who is coming.. Just imagine how i felt that time and that is my early days in Australia and it is humiliating to me).

On the other hand Indian students must understand and respect Australian culture. Examples Like
> Not speak loud in trains and buses.
> Say thanks to people.
> Say sorry or excuse before interput some one.Etc

Please don't misunderstand me I love this country and i love to stay in this country and I feel only fortune people will get chance to stay in this country, this is a great country but lets focus on some problems and fix it other wise it will come and bit you later. This is not lighting the fire this is just small thought of trying to find out the root cause of these recent issues and try to fix it.
Thanks...

hello to all my frnds in

hello to all my frnds in aus,i stayed in australia for avbut two months and in those two mnths i observed a horrible thing that is related to our people in australia, first of all the indians are illusioned right frm the start by the agents, they r fooled by them tht they will gt the best money fr their work and ensure them a higher living standard in australia ,the latter is correct but the main prob is our student's abilty and his qualifictaions to work in the field he has chosen ,the aus standard are way higer thn indian ones in terms of personal abilities and educational qualifications so a average student can complete his studies in aus but whtr he gets a job in his field depends partly on his personal abilities and to some extent ,his qualifications

as far as ive seen ,people find it hard to get thmselves register as professional in various fileds such as doctors, engineers and physiotherapists, the assesment test r so tough tht indians giv up n start finding lower level jobs to sustain themselves in aus

cultural diffrence and urban sophistication(as quoted by anita nair ) r also important factors affectin indians

people frm villages and rural india come to aus with bigger expectation thn the real things n r so much embarrased n feel so cheated after reaching here , the urbanisation if aus cities is way faster thn ours so our young indians find it difficult to adjust thmselves in this society,

higher expectation of earning milions n higher standard of livin attract a nmber of students which a proving a boon to australian economy ..........

What are you saying ? Youmean to say that India does not have discrimination ? the entire 09 election was executed based on caste politics.

Australia is not a racist country

Hi all,

My name is Srinivas and I have lived in Australia for about 5 years now, initially as an Indian student and now as an Australian citizen. Apart from India and Australia, I have lived in many other countries as well. This post of mine is in response to some of the posts that outlined experiences of violence in Australia by people of Indian origin.

I feel sad for the plight of some of the students of Indian origin here, who have faced some trouble in the recent past. However, I should also write that CRIME and RACISM are not one and the same. Crimes related to drunk behavior are becoming more and more common in some suburbs in most Australian cities. Indians are not the only victims of drunk behavior, the victims have been of all colors and all backgrounds. The Indian media is playing a very dirty game to sensationalise the crimes as "Racist attacks".

Having lived in this country for about 5 years, I can safely say from my heart, that Australians, in general, are not racist. To label Australians as racist in general is simply a lie. Iam not trying to prove that 100% of Australians are somehow racist-proof - this statement would be a lie as well, for no human being on this planet is perfectly unbiased. There will always be a small minority of people in every group with a racist mindset. It is not possible for us to have a perfect world, with everybody behaving like saints. However to call Australia as racist is simply unfair.

I would however agree that the police forces in Australia are simply inefficient in dealing with even the pettiest of crimes. The anger of the Indian students and others of Indian origin should be directed towards the inefficiency of the police, not the Australian state.

Many Australians think that India is a country where the caste system is rampant and lower castes are always exploited by the so-called higher castes. But I know from my experience in India, that India is not as bad as the Aussies think India to be. I have lived in both semi-urban and rural environments and I have never seen untouchability even in my father's and grandfather's village. The only caste system that I have seen in India is the "rich caste" and the "poor caste". However, Iam not saying that all Indians are caste-free in their minds. There might be people in India who may think that people of their caste are superior compared to all others; But to call all Indians as 'casteists' is unfair.

There are almost no western countries in which racism is institutionalised. However, the same cannot be said about all countries in the world. There are genuninely racist countries in the world, such as Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Malaysia, SriLanka etc. Has the Indian media seriously raised issues about the plight of Sikhs and Hindus in Pakistan. Do we know how many Sikhs and Hindus have lost their lives in Pakistan over the last two years? Do we know how many Indians were jailed in Malaysia by the Malaysian government in the recent past? Do we know that an Indian lady was jailed and forced to consume beef against her will in Malaysia. Do we know anything about the plight of non-muslim Indians in Saudi Arabia? Do we know the plight of Tamils in SriLanka? The generic answer to these questions is "no", because the Indian media have their own vested interests. The so called angry young man, Amitabh Bachan cannot raise his voice against these injustices and racist attacks on Indians, because of local political compulsions within India. However, the angry young man can raise his voice against Australia. He knows where he can act to be angry and where he cannot. After all, he (or is wife) have in-depth experience in politics and thus he is a wise old man now.

Indians in Australia have every freedom when it comes to their daily life - food habits, culture, religion, dressing habits, temples, gurudwaras, bollywood - everything is here. Nobody has destroyed temples in Australia as they do regularly in Pakistan and Malaysia. Racism is institutionalised by the Government in some of these Islamic countries. Will the Indian media ever stand up to these attrocities? No, because some of the Indian media commentators are on the payrolls of their Arab paymasters. For example, Barkha Dutt of NDTV fame is on the payrolls of Govt of UAE(she works for 'Khaleeji Times' a middle-eastern part government owned news paper).

We Indians should wise up; There is no need to pick out soft targets in the western countries. This holds atleast for Indian Hindus, because Indian Hindus have limited options - live in India or live in one of the western countries. Living in many Islamic countries for Indian Hindus equates to giving up one many of their basic human rights. Lets not bite the hand that feeds us. Lets see things in its proper perspective.

Now, just because I have written against some of the Muslim governments, does not mean to say that Iam against Islam. Iam not aginst any religion, any nationality. Iam only aginst extreme injustice and extreme racism, especially constitution-supported racism.

People may think Iam totally wrong, but what I have written above is my honest perception of ground realities in the world today. I have written from my experience and conscience and have tried to be unbiased, but being a human, means to be biased to some extent.

Peace.

Regards,
srinivas

You are absolutely wrong

You are one of those people who got kicked on the backside during 1947. If it were upto people like you, india would be still under british rule. Stand up for your rights and stop being a pussy. What are you going to do if one of your own family members or your closest friend gets attacked by these morons. You are already half dead with an attitude like this.
